World’s first early detection of Red Palm Weevils (RPW) based on AI-assisted fibre-optic sensing technology

Ground breaking advancement in agricultural pest management. This system uses fibre-optic sensors embedded within palm trees to detect the early activity of Red Palm Weevils (RPW), a highly destructive pest, by sensing vibrations and sounds generated by larvae as they burrow into the tree.

AI-Enhanced Detection

The fiber-optic sensors transmit data to an AI system trained to recognize the unique acoustic and vibrational patterns caused by RPW larvae. This AI technology filters out background noise, environmental vibrations, and other irrelevant signals, focusing solely on patterns consistent with RPW infestation.

Real-Time Monitoring and Early Intervention

Traditional detection methods often discover infestations after visible damage, by which time the pest may have spread, endangering entire crops. With this fiber-optic system, infestations can be identified at the earliest stages, even before any visible signs appear. This real-time detection allows for immediate action, stopping infestations from spreading to nearby trees.

Scalable and Environmentally Friendly

Fiber-optic sensing combined with AI doesn’t require chemical treatments unless a pest presence is confirmed, reducing unnecessary pesticide use. This makes the system scalable to large groves, where trees can be individually monitored and treated only when needed, preserving both environmental and agricultural health.

Improved Decision-Making for Farmers

By identifying and mapping infestations early, farmers can allocate resources more efficiently, focusing on high-risk areas, saving costs, and potentially increasing crop yields by reducing loss from RPW infestations.
